How to write a report card comment

A good comment fits in two or three sentences and follows three steps.

1. The fact
What the student did this period: effort, behavior or results, in specific terms.
2. The nuance
What is still fragile, described as a behavior or a skill, never as a character trait.
3. The next step
One concrete, achievable next step, and a note of encouragement.

Two examples

Middle school, steady work, quiet in class
A conscientious student whose results have improved markedly. Participation is still quiet. She should try to speak up more to build on this progress.

High school, real ability, uneven effort
Clear ability, but study at home is not yet regular, and results do not reflect your potential. More consistent effort will make a real difference.

Report card comment examples by student profile

Twenty-four examples to adapt, sorted by student profile and grade level. Each one follows the three steps: fact, nuance, next step.

Excellent student

Elementary school: Emma is a curious, careful worker whose results are excellent across the board. Her contributions enrich our class discussions. Keep up the wonderful work!
Middle school: Lucas consistently produces thorough, high-quality work and contributes thoughtfully in class. His results are excellent, and he should be proud of this report.
High school: An excellent report, built on rigor and independence. Your results are outstanding. Keep challenging yourself as you prepare for the next stage.

Steady and improving

Elementary school: Mia works hard, and it shows: her reading has improved markedly. She should keep practicing at home every day to build on this progress.
Middle school: Noah's results have improved steadily thanks to consistent effort. A few concepts still need consolidating. He should keep going in this direction.
High school: Real, encouraging progress, the result of regular work. Your study methods can still become more efficient. Keep up the effort.

Struggling but willing

Elementary school: Leo tries hard and does not give up, even when tasks are difficult. Basic number skills are not yet secure. Daily practice, with the support offered in class, will help him move forward.
Middle school: Sophie is willing and keeps trying. Her results remain fragile, especially in written work. She should revisit the topics she has not yet mastered and ask for help as soon as something is unclear.
High school: Your effort is real, even if results are still below expectations. Rebuilding the foundations methodically is the priority. Don't be discouraged: consistency will pay off.

Capable but distracted

Elementary school: Ella grasps new ideas quickly but is often distracted during independent work. She should aim to stay focused until each task is finished.
Middle school: Ben has real ability, but his effort is not yet consistent and his results do not reflect his potential. More focus and regular review will make a real difference.
High school: You have clear ability that is not yet fully used. Focus and independent study are still uneven. More consistent commitment would bring the results you are capable of.

Chatty in class

Elementary school: Oscar participates with enthusiasm, but side conversations often pull him away from his work. He should practice raising his hand and listening to others.
Middle school: Results are fair, but talking in class gets in the way of concentration. More attentive behavior would help Jack make further progress.
High school: A fair report that side conversations in class are holding back. Better focus would let you make the most of your ability.

Results slipping

Elementary school: Lily has found this period harder, and her math results have slipped. She should get back to the daily practice that worked so well earlier in the year.
Middle school: Results have slipped, especially in written work, and homework is less regular than before. A quick refocus will help get things back on track.
High school: Results are lower than in the previous report, as independent study has slipped. Refocus quickly: you have what it takes to get back to your earlier level.

Not enough effort

Elementary school: Max has ability but does not always finish his work. Practicing at home every day will help him make progress.
Middle school: Very little work is being completed: homework is often missing and review is not regular. A fresh start is needed now.
High school: A clear lack of effort is weighing on your results. The ability is there: regular, serious work is essential from now on.

Quiet student

Elementary school: Grace is a careful, conscientious student, but very quiet in class. She can trust herself and raise her hand more often.
Middle school: A conscientious student with solid results, Chloe still holds back during discussions. She should speak up more often to show what she knows.
High school: Serious work and good results. Your participation is still limited: don't hesitate to share your ideas and bring your knowledge to life.

Which comment for which grade?

A few starting points by overall grade, to adapt to the student and the subject:

A
Outstanding work, done with care. Keep it up.
B
A solid report. A few topics still need consolidating to go further.
C
Results are uneven. More regular review will help secure the basics.
D or F
A difficult report: the basics need rebuilding, and work must begin now.

These are suggestions, not an official scale: the same grade can hide a student who is improving or slipping, and the comment should say which.

It sums up, in a few words, the student's effort, behavior and results for the period, and shows how to improve. It speaks to the student and their family.

Two or three sentences are usually enough: a fact, a nuance, a next step. The character count helps you fit the space your school or software allows.

Start with what is going well or with the effort made, describe the difficulty without labeling the student, then give one concrete next step. The lowest bands in the generator follow that rule.
